Meet Macy Bronte. Macy chose to help continue Lucy’s legacy by choosing Lucy Belle’s Rainbow as her Mitzvah project. Macy hails from Narberth, Pennsylvania and is a seventh grader at Welsh Valley Middle School.
Macy learned about Lucy from one of Lucy’s seventh grade teachers, Moira Messick. Lucy was in treatment her entire seventh grade year and Moira made seventh grade a great year for her. She thrived in her classroom. Moira also worked with Lucy’s family and was completely present during the awful period when Lucy became very sick and later died. Through Moira and Moira’s daughter Kate, Macy came to know Lucy even though the two girls have never met. Macy was drawn to Lucy and Lucy’s story and decided that Lucy’s story needed telling. She incorporated her in all aspects of her ceremony – from the invitations to her Torah speech. She collected donations and art supplies and questioned why things like this even happen. It is a lot for a kid to absorb, the bad things of this world. Macy decided that despite the bad thing that happened, something good was coming from it. A tiny drop of Lucy was being placed in every person that Macy told. And those parts were uniting to help kids with cancer, something Lucy felt very strongly about. Because of Macy, Lots of children are going to be able to do something completely normal. They will get to create art and take their minds off treatment, if only for a moment. A drop of Lucy is going into each one of those bags and to each one of those kids. Thank you, Macy, for your work to honor Lucy and to help kids with life threatening illnesses make art and smile.
